Training

Behavior is both predictable and a form of communication. Misbehavior in school is how students communicate that they lack the necessary skills to complete desired tasks in socially appropriate ways, frequently evidenced by their similarly poor reactions to the same dysregulating triggers or antecedents. Student behavior is one of the top-cited issues by teachers as a cause of disrupted learning in the classroom, with many factors contributing to students acting out. As students experience barriers to success, like repeated academic or social failure, they are increasingly likely to avoid or attempt to escape from a situation or become verbally or physically aggressive.

This module will examine some useful strategies and optimal conditions that adults can establish to promote student success and reduce situations of imminent danger when a student presents a serious danger to the safety and well-being of themself or others.

In this learning module, staff will learn:

  • Identify the benefits and outcomes of structured environments

  • Connect student behaviors to instructional practices

  • Understand the use of precorrection and prompting to reduce student agitation

  • Recognize a continuum of adult practices to minimize escalating behavior

This course will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
